I am the POA for mom with dementia. My sister is a scientist and is very concerned that Haldol has just been prescribed in a baby dose for mom. I understand that Haldol has a shorter half life etc. Mom isn t getting the injections at all. My sister is referring to the studies done around 2005 for death in dementia patients. The last article I read was a DO opinion from 2016. Can you update us on the findings on this drug class recently. I also see that Haldol is behavior related and Risperdal is slightly more for clear mindedness.my

How Can Dementia Be Treated?
Hi, I would explain that Haldol has much more adverse effects in elderly patients compared to risperidone. Anyway, its action is much faster. But, considering the fact that she suffers from dementia, I would prefer risperidone or quetiapine to help improve her agitation and delusions. Regarding dementia, other drugs may help improve her situation like Memantine or Donepezil. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
