How Can Depression After An Abortion Be Dealt With?

My wife just recently had to have an abortion and now is taking Zoloft to help with the depression and is now having trouble sleeping because she keeps having nightmares about our decision to have the abortion. We could not have the child because she was not physically able to go full term without it being fatal to her and/or the baby so we chose to abort because we have a 2 year old and a 4 year old and both pregnancies were extremely difficult for her. My question is should she seek medical attention? If so what kind of doctor should she see?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
The cause for her suffering depression is obvious and is a natural reaction in most cases to such difficult situations. In my opinion she should continue with her antidepressants as most of these medications take atleast 3-4 weeks for their optimum effect. Meanwhile a short acting benzodiazepine will help her recovering back to normal status. She can use Tab. Ativan 2mg once daily before retiring every night for 10 days. After 10 days the dose can be halved (Ativan 1mg) for next 1 week and can then be stopped. Any further information required then your concerns will be welcomed.
