Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I hope I can reduce the number of concerns, you have about your son by telling you that
manic depression and bipolar are two different terms that define the same diagnosis. Perhaps, whoever referred your son to the hospital felt that since he wanted to be with God, he wished to be away from humans and was in danger of hurting himself in order to get away. However, your son is in danger if he remains around his grandmother. It is urgent that you remove him from her presence immediately! not only for now while he could be gravely injured. But also for his emotional health and well-being in the future.
I am a
pediatrician and am well aware of the mental health consequences(school performance, relations with peers, ability to obtain employment and keep a job, good marriage, staying on the good side of the law, and
substance abuse) for children who have been physically or sexually abused. For emphasis, I repeat you must remove him now or the situation will get worse. It is not too soon for you to have him evaluated by a child
psychologist or
psychiatrist. Perhaps, the Social Services Department in your community health department can help you located alternative housing if there are no other family or church members or close friends he could stay with while you are at work.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
