Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Diarrhea Along With Fever And Shortness Of Breath Be Treated?
My husband is 73 years old, not in good health and severely overweight. For the last 24 hours, constant diarrhea and painful gas. Fever since this afternoon he says (I still work). Head warm, hands cold. Bloodshot eyes. I observed significant shortness of breath and slow return to normal respiration following trips to and from bathroom. What can I do to help him? Thank you.
He might be suffering from symptoms of dehydration due to fever and diarrhea. I would advise medications like Paracetamol for the fever, Loperamide to reduce episodes of loose stools, a course of probiotics like Lactobacilli.
If he has stomach cramping, with blood and mucus in the stools, he might need a course of antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin-Tinidazole. Oral rehydration solution, tender coconut water, fluids, will help combat dehydration. Antacids like Pantoprazole might also help.
It would be best to visit the hospital, as he might require intravenous fluids.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan,
General & Family Physician
