How Can Diarrhea In A Child Be Treated?

My grandson (6 years old in August, 43 pounds) is on augmentin for an ear infection. This is the 5th day and he has been having diarrhea since Thursday. His first dose was Thursday night. The diarrhea is brown and has a yellow oily-ness to it. Can I use an anti-diarrheal such as children s imodium D?

Hello,

I am sorry to hear about your grandson's suffering. I will try my best to help him. In order to do that I need you to give me some more details. How many times does he pass stools in a day? What is the quantity and consistency each time? Does he have fever or abdominal pain? Does he have dry mouth? Does he feel more thirsty than usual? What is the amount of urine he has been passing since the onset of diarrhea?

My first suspicion for the cause of this diarrhea would be the antibiotic (Augmentin) he has been taking. If that is the case, it should resolve by itself once the course of antibiotic is completed. In the meantime, I would recommend following measures.
1. Wash hands before and after using the toilet with soap
2. Give him plenty of oral fluids. You can mix oral rehydration powder in the water.
3. Avoid milk and milk products temporarily.
4. Avoid food with high fiber content.

If he has fever and cramping abdominal pain, I would recommend you to consult a doctor. There is no role for anti-diarrheal in this situation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bright Jebaraj S
