How Can Difficulty In Swallowing And GERD Be Treated?

I just had a barium swallow done today. I have been having trouble swallowing and increased GERD. The Dr. had to stop the test because I was aspirating. He showed me where things were getting stuck which is the beginning , in the essophagus and at the opening of the stomach. I have not been feeling well espcially the last few days and I do not have an appetite as well. If this is not cancer are there things that can be done?

Hello,

Difficulty in swallowing is seen in many conditions. As per your presenting complaints, the cause was Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). We can confirm this by symptoms itself as it flipped back and went down.

These can be confirmed by following investigations which are exclusively meant for gastrointestinal tract:
1. ENDOSCOPY
2. Ultrasound abdomen

Following treatment can follow:
1. Antacids that neutralize stomach acid
2. Medications to reduce acid production

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vamsi Krishna Chittimoju
