How Can Diverticulitis And Severe Lower Abdominal Pain Be Treated?

Recently diagnosed with diverticulitis from extreme lower abdomen pain, chills & fever, & high white blood cell count. Was on strong antibiotic and anti-fungal for a week with another antibiotic shot when I finished it. My doctor said to eat a bland diet but gave me no specifics. I have googled data but find much contrary information. It seems I wouldn t have anything that causes inflammation & yet the Mayo Diet includes milk, yogurt & cheese. I need to know what to eat to heal as I am very uncertain. Any advice is most appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Diverticulitis is an extended pouch in lumen of intestine. So whenever there is indigestion/ infection or food intolerance ( gluten or lactose intollerance- which needs to be investigated & excluded/ diagnosed & treated. The diverticulum gets inflamed or infected to cause the symptoms. So management consists of

- Exclusion/ diagnosis, treatment & avoidance of the triggering factors. Take bland food ( No or less spices, low fat & low fiber content ).
- Avoid food found to be allergic to.

Avoid fruits with small seeds & high fibers.Banana & melon are safer fruits. Avoid onion, garlic, pepper, broccoli, cabbage or cauliflower- as they tend to produce more gas. Avoid high fat dairy products( full cream milk or ice cream). Can take fat less milk, cheese. Vegetables allowed are- sweet potato, carrot, beat, peas, pumpkin , spinach, Cooked cereals like cooked cream of wheat /refined grains ,white bread, pasta etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
