How Can Earache Along With Sore Throat Be Treated?

I have congestion in my nose, ears and sinuses which has considerably reduced my ability to hear. I have pain in my left ear and a sore throat from coughing as mucus moves down my throat. I have been using Flonase but it has not cleared my ears. What other over the counter medication can I take to help relieve my symptoms?

Hello,

Congestion in nose, ears and sinuses and pain in the ear and sore throat and post nasal drip can be due to a sinus infection that might have progressed from cold. As ears and throat are connected through eustachian tube, therefore post nasal drip and excess cough can cause obstruction of the ear tube causing clogged ears. I would suggest you consult an ENT physician and get evaluated, and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like PNS view x-ray help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

You can advise a course of antibiotics like Cephalexin, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, decongestants like Pseudoephedrine, do saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room. You can also advise decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
