How Can Elevated BP And Immobility After A Stroke Be Treated?
A family member of mine had a stroke. A blockage of some sort in her brain. She is 58 years old. Lost the ability to move her arm during the stroke. She is able to walk, go to the bathroom on her own, speak well, comprehend well. She is acting like it is no big deal and not a serious thing. She has been in the hospital 5 days now. Her blood pressure is very high and they are trying to get that under control. She never had high blood pressure before. Now they are doing a TEE test on her. Will she be able to be on her own at home after having a stroke?????
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Survival and mobility after stroke depends on the extent of the stroke. In her case if she is able to walk and talk, this means that she has a minor one and that she can well be fine in some time however few things must be born in mind. Physiotherapy of the affected limb is extremely important besides this secondary prevention that is trying to avoid any further stroke (If someone has one, he can have another) by good blood pressure and sugar control and some blood thinning drugs. I hope her doctors would be telling her all these and managing her. BP may better not be dropped in the initial days. But I am hopeful she would be soon back to life though at the cost of some minimum weakness.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
