How Can Elevated Alkaline Phosphatase Levels Be Treated?

I am female of 58 years, my height is 5 feet & 5 inches and weigh about 82 kg. My recent test shows Alkaline phosphatase reading at 180. I noticed that this level is continuing for the last 2-3 years. I have never been prescribed any medication for this. The doctor simply advised me to walk for half an hour which I am doing regularly along with cycling in the gym for more than ten minutes. My other symptoms are fatigue after even a very little exertion, osteoporosis in my left knee and sometimes feel puffiness in the whole body. Please advise what should I do to get rid of the high level of Alkaline phosphatase. Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern and would explain that the main problem is not just to lower Alkaline phosphatase levels, but it is important to try to find the possible underlying cause and treat it if possible. You should know that this enzyme is part of the liver, muscles and the bones. So, its elevations could be related to disorders that affect the above tissues. Active osteoporosis could lead to such lab findings too. For this reason, it is necessary to treat osteoporosis properly. I would also recommend checking vitamin D levels for possible deficiency.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
