How Can Esophagitis Be Treated?

I have been diagnosed with both GERD and Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease. For years I have taken medication for GERD. Almost two years ago, I had an Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) procedure done in the hopes of being able to have a surgical procedure to correct the reflux problem. The results showed mild esophagitis. My insurance would not cover the surgery and to date, no surgery has been done. Recently, I have be diagnosed with sleep apnea which I will likely have to use a CPAP machine even though I would prefer surgery to correct the problem. Please advise.

Hello,

GERD is Gastroesophageal reflux disease which in turn can give LRPD that is laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. You are already taking medications and have undergone UGD endoscopy showing only mild esophagoscopy.

I would advise you the following in such a situation:

- To ask for esophageal manometry, thick Barium swallow for esophagus, stomach and follow through to find a probable cause like Intestinal obstruction, bile reflux and so on. These may be the preceding causes not allowing you to recover fully.

- Such problems are known to occur in people with anxiety and stress and unless it is treated you may not get well.

- Diet adjustment after finding the foods and beverages that instigate or enhance the symptoms and stopping such things helps a lot.

- Domperidone and antacids medicines can be given, when on empty stomach.

- Early dinner and walk around.

- Sleeping in reclining position and treatment of sleep apnea helps further.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
