How Can Esosinophilic Esophagitis Be Treated?

My daughter has been diagnosed with esosinophilic esophagitis. She has had several dilations, little l\help. She has stopped daily and gluten, it will get better than start closing up again. She is 25 years, works as an RN. She has chocked several times over her lifetime, last two times, two years apart, she had to be taken to ER via ambulance. She is on a inhaler that she swallows the after the puff and also an prescribed antacid. Is there a natural way to accompany the meds?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

1. Since she is a diagnosed case of eosinophilic oesophagitis resulting in esophageal motility disorder [G.E.R.D] thus following preventive aspect can be tried, since I won't recommend any single drug or medicine without first inspecting and examining. Bland and soft diet, more of milk. Avoid hot drinks and spicy food. Give small, non-bulky meals more frequently [since GERD causes hiccups/ irritability]. Head high position at night. [since GERD causes regurgitation/choking].

2. Management of GERD in both adults and children is based on disease severity, the degree of symptoms, and presence or absence of complications of GERD determined by the diagnostic evaluation, so be under the regular supervision of your attending Physician and one has to keep a watch on other complications arising due to G.E.R.D such as: respiratory and feeding problems.

PS. Presently, there is/are no medications known to cure eosinophilic esophagitis, although oral/topical steroids may be prescribed to suppress eosinophil accumulation, relieve damage to the tissue in the esophagus, and alleviate symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
