How Can Excessive Abdominal Gas Be Treated?

My granddaughter is in the synchronizued swimming national selection and spends 5 hours a day in the pool. She has problems of stopping farting at school and when with friends but afterwards she has big pains in the stomac. Is it due to chlorine in the water? How can she help herself? This can be very shameful.... Thanks for the answer.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Swimming at a vigorous pace may cause the development of excessive gas later on. It is due to swallowing air while swimming with speed.

She should give more time when she eats, eating too quickly or chewing gums before swimming may cause the development of flatulence.

Let her take easily digestible food, do not take food that is hard to digest(broccoli, cauliflower, fiber-rich food).

She should avoid eating before swimming. Get her physically examined by a GP, so that she can be treated. She may need antacids & PPI's.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
