How Can Excessive Weight Gain Be Reduced?

My daughter is 33 and is on Epilum as she had a seizure in June last year. The one and only, she has a blood clot on the brain, going for angiogram to see if they need to remove it. She has put on so much weight and is battling to lose and is very unhappy. She has gone up two sizes in clothing in six months. How can she loose some weight.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for your query on HCM

"As"per your clinical history is concerned please follow like this -

1)Do a clinical examination by your Doctor [Endocrinologist]and do few investigations like [Fasting blood sugar, TSH and ultrasound] to ruled out any underlying pathological causes and if no cause is found then follow as below.

2)Do exercise regularly. You need to get [150--300 ]minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week to prevent weight gain. Moderately intense physical activities include fast walking and swimming.

3)Do follow a healthy eating plan. Focus on low-calorie, nutrient-dense foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid saturated fat and limit sweets and alcohol. Eat three regular meals a day with limited snacking. You can still enjoy small amounts of high-fat, high-calorie foods as an infrequent treat. Just be sure to choose foods that promote a healthy weight and good health most of the time.

4)Try to know and avoid the food traps that cause you to eat. Identify situations that trigger out-of-control eating. Try keeping a journal and write down what you eat, how much you eat, when you eat, how you're feeling and how hungry you are. After a while, you should see patterns emerge. You can plan ahead and develop strategies for handling these types of situations and stay in control of your eating behaviors.

5)Try to monitor your weight regularly. Monitoring your weight can tell you whether your efforts are working and can help you detect small weight gains before they become big problems.

6)Discuss with your treating Doctor about prescription weight loss medications like [ORLISTAT] which you need to take after meal and to get result you need to do regular exercise.

Hope that helps
