Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi dictor My mother 44 years old suffering from extra pontine mylenosis. In January 6 she got admitted and she is recovering slowly but she is not recognizing us Whenever we call she look at us and follows some commands When will she get full consciousness
Pontine and extrapontine myelinolysis is a very serious condition with a high risk of disability. In terms of treatment, I am afraid no specific treatment exists, only supportive treatment checking electrolyte levels.
Vitamins are often added in alcoholic patients to little effect. Improvement is hoped in the first 6 months but it is a matter of time and physical therapy, there is no miracle-working drug.
How much hope there is for improvement is hard to say especially as I don't know the extent of the damage seen on brain imaging, but the risk for disability is high and increases with the initial extent of the lesion on MRI imaging.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
