How Can Fatty Liver And Edema In The Lower Extremities Be Treated?

I have a friend with non alcoholic fatty cirrhosis liver disease. She is complaining of lower extremity edema which the Dr. txs with Lasix. there is also some kidney failure to consider when using a diuretic. She is also anemic and I have been searching for any connection between RBC production and liver failure. I do not feel she has had any continuity of care across disciplines. So much for portable med records! Her first Hepatic crisis was a hospital admission with such a low H&H from hemorrhaging esophageal vessels and spent a week in ICU with no memory of any of it. She was told by one Dr. that she had only a small portion of her liver functioning and needed to be on the transplant list. She was discharged soon there after with no f/up apt. made to see any Liver specialist. She was told to make the apt. herself. That got her nowhere and she continues from one inappropriate Dr. to another. We have been friend since 8th grade and myself being a retired OB-GYN nurse ; I feel so frustrated that the healthcare community has failed her. Any guidance you can give me to help my friend understand her illness better would be helpful. Thank You

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Chronic diseases can cause normocytic normochromic anemia, one of the types of anemia. It can occur with any long term illness.

This means that her liver failure can definitely cause anemia. A complete blood count would show a decrease an HB but normal MCV and MCHC.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
