How Can Fever, Severe Headache, Back Pain, Dizziness And Sore Joints Be Treated?

Hi. My sixteen year old son had a high fever 104.2 Thursday evening along with a severe headache, very sore back, dizziness, and sore joints. I took him to the ER that night. They took blood and the tests were all negative. They did a street test and a flu test and a uranalasis . All were negative. They also were sending blood out to be cultured. No results as of yet. He has continued since Thursday night with a fever in the range of 100-101.5 degrees. I have been switching off with Tylenol and ibuprofen. His fever will break and then come back a few hours later. He has a small red dot on his back that he says is very sore to the touch. He thought something had fallen into his shirt while mowing the lawn about two to three weeks ago. I never saw a tick on him. There isn t a red ring around the small red dot nor does it seem to be irritated on the skin surrounding it. The head ache has gone away but he is experiencing some boughts of nausea here and there. I have called his pediatrician about this and they say viral as well as the ER doctor. The pediatrician also said it could be viral meningitis. How long could these symptoms last? Should I take him back to the doctor or ER? Each day he has slept a lot, except for today. I took him out to get him out of the house and go for a ride. Thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In most cases of viral infection, symptoms last 1 to 2 weeks. Fever, headache and pain are in keeping a viral infection as mentioned by the doctors that reviewed him.

The fever can be intermittent and the excessive sleepiness is the body's way of providing rest so that he would have the energy to fight the infection.

Viral meningitis is a possibility. Most children recover well from viral illnesses.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
