How Can Fibrocystic Breasts Be Treated?
Hi, I have fibrocystic breasts. I am very used to lumps and am checked yearly at my doctors recommendation. This time though the one large cyst in my right breast is not going away and hurts when I lift my arm ( ie: to shampoo or brush my hair). The pain starts at where my armpit and breast meet and radiates to the nipple. It is not constant and the level varies from discomfort at times to being unable to lift my arm above shoulder level at all. Is it reasonable for me to ask for a second breast exam even though I had one 5 months ago? Thanks

Fibrocystic breast disease, a condition causing breast pain, cysts, and noncancerous breast lumps, affects many women.
Usually, mild pain relievers such as acetylsalicylic acid or ibuprofen are quite effective. In addition, a well-fitted bra that provides good support may also be effective.
The bra can even be worn at night. If medication doesn't alleviate the discomfort, your doctor may try to treat cysts by removing the fluid through aspiration.
If the cyst persists and continues to cause discomfort, it may be removed surgically. Regular breast examinations are extremely important.
But it is no longer recommended for women aged 40 to 74 who are not at a high risk of breast cancer.
