Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Approx. one month ago I developed N/V/D after eating at Burger King. It subsided but with some intermittent diarrhea. This past Monday I started having abd cramping and by the middle of the night was throwing up with diarrhea. I am still unable to eat anything but bland food and even that is causing abdominal discomfort and the nausea is not improving. I also have significant joint pain. I do not have my gall bladder and have had a hysterectomy. I have recurrent UTIs but this does not feel like a UTI. Of concern is that I intermittently have significant intense itching but no rash.
Treatment for food poisoning typically depends on the source of the illness and the severity of your symptoms. For most people, the illness resolves without treatment within a few days, though some types of food poisoning may last longer. Fluids and electrolytes — minerals such as sodium, potassium and calcium that maintain the balance of fluids in your body — lost to persistent diarrhea need to be replaced. Antibiotics if you have certain kinds of bacterial food poisoning and your symptoms are severe. Adults with diarrhea that isn't bloody and who have no fever may get relief from taking the medication loperamide (Imodium A-D) or bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol). Avoid certain foods and substances until you're feeling better. These include dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and fatty or highly seasoned foods.
