Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am coming off of one of the worst food poisoning experiences I ve ever had with no fever. I threw up 14 times in one day (last Monday) and had diarrhea from Monday to Thursday. On top of that, my wife and I have had to travel from Michigan to California on Wednesday. It was a disaster as I spent no less than 9 times in the restroom. Needless to say I have been pretty tender since then but I ve started to develop an appetite and have been trying to eat things that won t irritate my stomach/intestines. So I felt strong enough to go on a brisk hike with my family about 4 miles on hilly paths. This I thought would be a great way to develop my appetite and it was. On the way home we stopped at a Thai restaurant. I had two small spring rolls with a tiny bit of sause that was not that spicy. Then ordered hot Jasmine tea and some hot Wonton soup. After a couple of sips of the tea and this soup I had a sharp chest pain under my rib cage above my right lung (pain level 6). It hurt to breathe. I immediately stopped eating and began drinking the cold water on the table to put out this fire which I thought was acid reflux upset on my esophogas causing this pain. I also took some anti acid tabs on the way home and continued to drink water. I finally was able to breathe without pain however, and this is where it gets weird, the chest pain Flair s up when I clear my throat and/or attempt to cough. Think I caught some airborne bug on the plane and had been hacking the last couple days. Any ideas? It s been five hours and the pain has only mildly subsided. May be I should be eating steamed white rice until my stomach really heals.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Some advice that I can give to you are :
-Avoid food for the first few hours as your stomach settles down.
-Drink water, broth, or an electrolyte solution, which will replace the minerals that you lose with vomiting and diarrhea.
-Eat when you feel ready, but start with small amounts of bland, non-fatty foods such as toast, rice, and crackers.
-Get plenty of rest.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
