Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my daughter who is 5 fell off the monkey bars and fractured her elbow in 2 places. the radies head and the back bone of the elbow. she had surgery but no pins were put into place due to the surgeon saying the pin would not go through. h said that he feels there was a previous injury. i told him NO. he just manipilated the bone to about 20mm. after one week of surgery he assesed her and said that we need a second opinion and is very concerned about the type of fracture. the radiues head is a more serious injury. when we saw a second doctor at childrens hospital she mentioned that the other doctor should have not let her leave the operaton room with out a pin. the new doctor can not operate being that its been 3 weeks sice the injury is is afraid of deformity in the arm. she suggest to remove her cast next week and start her on occupational therapy. she feels the bones might come back together as she is healing in therapy and if no then revisit the surgery in about 5 months. please help in this for i am so scared for my daughter. i feel like there was a malpractice from the first surgeon by failing to put in the pins.
Usually, in small children the fracture heals on its own due to bone growth and surgery isn't recommended unless and until there is displaced fracture. Wait for the cast to come out and make her do simple exercises like elbow extension. With occupational therapy, she should get good elbow movements and healing will naturally occur on its own. Take the x-ray post 5-6 months and look out if the bone has healed. In case if it fails a surgery will be advised.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
