How Can Fractured Ribs Be Treated?

I fractured a rib on or about august 15th. I had x-rays which confirmed what I was pretty sure what it was. I went appox. 7 weeks and the pain, moving and to the touch went away and was given an all go to resume my usual work duties, which include some moderate to heavy lifting and a lot of bending. A couple weeks ago the pain came back after a "normal" day of work and a restless night sleeping. The pain has not subsided and it's crazy nuts when I get out of bed or get in and more so getting out of the car. Could it still be fractured or did I strain the muscles by trying to compensate?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern and since we're a diagnosed case of a fractured rib and given symptomwise management, and presently some symptoms have resurfaced, thus I'm of the following opinion:

i. It could be the old fractured rib not healed properly
ii. probably costochondritis.
iii. muscle sprain, so If by adopting
- hot water fomentation
- rest with minimal movements
- chest strapping
- intercostal nerve block
- if by taking an analgesic, anti-inflammatory enzymes, and muscle relaxant, the pain goes away continue with the same, however, if the pain is not relieved to ask for Hb%, WBC, ESR & X-ray Chest

2. Apart from injury, pain could be a pleural pathology. [ask for chest X-ray to exclude pleuritis, pleural effusion]

PS. Although most of the times, pain may be the result of minor injury or postural changes, however sometimes there may be an underlying medical condition/situation which needs appropriate treatment.
