How Can Fungal Skin Infection On The Feet Be Treated?
My brother has a fungus on his foot - took him to dr. and he prescribed nystatin cream. Been using it for a week. No pain, or itching, just some peeling of the skin. Not clearing up though. Dr. said it was athlete's foot or a fungus. YYYY@YYYY
Athlete's foot is caused by fungal infection (trichophyton and microsporum species of fungus). Peeling of skin is a symptom of athlete's foot. It requires 3 to 4 weeks treatment under advise of a dermatologist. So continue to apply Nystatin/ Clotrimazole ointment for next 2 to 3 weeks.
You can also take Oral Terfinadine tablet, Keratolytic and Humectant medications such as urea, Salicyclic acid, and Lactic acid can be useful. It improve penetration of anti-fungal agents into the thickened skin.
Keeping socks and shoes clean (using bleach in the wash)will help. Cleaning bathtubs, showers, bathroom floors, sinks, and counters with bleach helps prevent reinfection of disease. Keep the area clean and dry, make the environment cool. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy diet.
Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.
Best regards, Dr. Sagar
