How Can Gamma-glutamyl Transpeptidase Level Be Lowered?

Hi. I have an elevated GGT level at the moment of 450. I wouldn t consider myself a heavy drinker but a regular one. I m stopping drinking immediately as a result. I m of average build, am active and have probably been a regular drinker including large amounts on the weekend for about 10-15 years. I am 34 years old. Any guidance on additional things I can do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.

Gamma glutamyl transpeptidase levels are elevated in chronic alcohol intaje and also if you recently have had an alcoholic drink.

I presume you have done your complete liver function test panel and its only the gamma GGT which is elevated. In that case, I would advise you not to worry as the levels will come down once a sufficient period of time has passed for the liver functions to recover - about 3-6 months; provided there is no further alcohol intake.

If the liver function tests are abnormal, then I would suggest you meet up with your physician to discuss the severity if liver damage.

Either way, giving up alcohol intake is a good decision that you have made.

Wishing you good health,

Regards,
Dr Geeta
