How Can Gastritis And Pain In The Upper Abdomen Be Treated?

I have Crohn s and several other autoimmune diseases. The most painful is interstitial cystitis, and I seem to be having a significant flare right now. Despite taking PPI and H2 blocker for nearly 15 years, I have developed erosive gastritis, which I cannot seem to quell. My Gastro MD has suggested IBgard, but I am hesitant -- peppermint is known to irritate the interstitial bladder, and I imagine it would exacerbate my GERD. I am willing to accept a possible dx of IBS now, in addition to my IBD. But it appears that IBgard deals more with lower abdomen distress, and my abdominal discomfort is definitely upper. Colonoscopy and EGD this summer revealed the erosive gastritis. My Crohn s is relatively quiet. Can IBgard help with upper abdominal discomfort, without exacerbating interstitial cystitis and/or heartburn?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms are nonspecific, but these may be suggestive of gastritis, GERD or hiatal hernia so you should do gastroscopy to evaluate it more accurately. This is caused by irritation of stomach mucosa by certain food or medications, stress and smoking. SO firstly it should be treated with home remedies and changing dietary habits. You need to avoid fried food, carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol and spicy food. You should eat more milk products, vegetables and boiled food. Also, certain antiacid medications may be required such as Pantoprasole or Ranitidine. In cases of severe pain, diagnosis should be established with endoscopic tests which include gastroscopy or barium swallow test.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
