How Can Gout In The Big Toe Be Treated?

I was treated for gout in my right big toe. It comes and goes. But the last time all my right toe joints hurt bad. And the swelling increased. It felt like I broke the bones in my foot. The pain was intense. I am at a good point now. A little swelling but I can walk and flex my toes. My dad suggested it might be bunions. Your opinion?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It could be aggravation of Gout arthritis caused byexcessive uric acid levels and their deposition .Great toe is most commonly affected. To confirm you need to measure serum uric acid levels and joint fluid aspirate examination for presence of uric acid crystals.Dietary advise would be to consume low amount of fat,red meat and cauliflower.Take lot of vitamin and minerals.
