How Can Hair Loss And Hirsutism Be Treated?

hello doctor. I have PCOS and present all the classic symptoms(multiple cysts on the ovaries, overweight with trouble maintaining weight, extremely hirsute, acne, hair loss at the scalp with receding hairline, and absent periods). In the past,I have been prescribed krimson-35 and acne clearing ointments, but due to considerable weight gain i was told to get off krimson-35. Next I sought an prolonged Ayurveda treatment, combined with a low dose contraceptive namely ovral-l (only for first few months for, according to my doctor to set the rhythm ), this combination has worked very well for me in the past with significant improvement in the hormone profile(LH and FSH ratio, testosterone, and progesterone ), weight issues. It did not help me with my hirsutism or my thinning hair. All in all , I was told discontinue the treatment after a year, as my doctor had seen the desired results, with the advice to follow a healthy lifestyle. Now flash forward to present, my symptoms have returned, I look the same as I did when I was first diagnosed with added woes of social anxiety and huge blow to my self-confidence . What is the suggested path to seek treatment in my case? Im willing to go back to the ayurvedic-modern treatment. But is ovral-l a good choice of combination pill for pcos? Does it help me with hair loss and hirsutism? and Lastly if the hormone levels do become normal will my lost hair grow back? Thank You for your attention.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Well, effective treatments for some types of hair loss are available. But some hair loss is permanent. If your hair loss is caused by an underlying disease, treatment for that disease will be necessary. This may include drugs to reduce inflammation and suppress your immune system, such as Prednisone. But also, 2 medications are used for treatment and include Minoxidil and Finasteride. If there is no success with these then hair transplant or restoration surgery can make the most of the hair you have left.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
