How Can Hair Loss Be Treated While Suffering From Adenomyosis?

I am at least 10 yrs postmenopausal (early menopause due to thyroidectomy 13 yrs ago). I am now 58. Just diagnosed with adenomyosis, and enlarged uterus. Had no problems prior, no hx of endometriosis either. Only problem I have had, and now found out it the cause is adenomyosis, is the massive hair loss. In last 6 mos. I have lost 3/4 of my hair, and also doesn t seem to be growing. What is treatment in the postmenopausal woman, and will my hair grow back? Cannot find answers to these questions. Only in premenopausal women, and it goes away when you reach menopause. Cannot find ANYTHING about reversing the hair loss. (Sorry about being vain about the hair---but hey, I am a woman!)

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I can understand why you would be concerned about losing your hair and am concerned about your nutritional status and the adequacy of your thyroid replacement regiment.

There are many things that can cause loss of hair such as you describe besides getting older. A vitamin D deficiency can cause such a loss as can insufficient thyroid replacement hormone therapy or inadequate selenium to convert the Synthroid pill that you are probably on to the active T3 thyroid hormone. Low iron can cause hair loss.

My advice to you is to get your vitamin D level checked and to take a supplement with the daily value of iodine and selenium in it. Have your hemoglobin AND your iron levels checked. Assure that you are eating 1-1.2 grams of protein per kg of body weight per day (a kg is 2.2 lbs). A low protein diet may cause hair loss. I would also advise an omega-3 supplement or to increase your dietary intake of fish, seafood, seaweed products and to avoid soy which may interfere with your thyroid replacement therapy.

I hope I have given you some ideas to pursue on the potential causes of your hair loss and it is my wish that you find relief once again in glowing locks of hair that remain on your head!

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
