How Can Hallucinations Caused By Nuplazid Be Treated?
Our neurologist is wanting to prescribe Nuplazid for my 89 year old husband with Parkinson s dementia. My husband has been experiencing for right a year horrible hallucinations. They are now occurring every week usually last 48-72 hours before he sleeps. I read some info on the drug and it seems a bit scary at my husband s age. The cost will probably keep us from trying if not the side effects.
I read your statement and i understand your concern.
Psychosis is PD patients is due to the side effects of atypical antipsychotic drugs that are used to treat parkinsons. They tend to raise dopamine level in brain thus reducing symptoms of PD, but on the other hand, Excess of Dopamine causes Hallucinations and Delusions,
Since Nuplazid is selective and reverse agonist of dopamine receptor, it raises dopamine levels but not that much to cause hallucinations and thus symptoms of PD are also decreased.
Thanks Dr Nasir Ali
