How Can Hammer Toes And Numbness On The Balls Of The Feet Be Treated?

balls of my feet increasing over about 5 years. In the last year I have developed 2 hammer toes which periodically have sharp stabbing pains where the toes join and in toe joints above them. The balls of my feet are somewhat numb too. Is there treatment for hammer toes and numbness? What are the causes of both?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, you need to get X-rays of the affected joints and feet as well as serum uric acid levels. Inflammatory markers like CRP and ESR may also be needed.

Rarely autoimmune causes may also lead to such arthralgias or arthritis so a Rheumatologist review or an orthopedic surgeon review is recommended. Meanwhile OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen alongwith muscle relaxants like tizanidine or orphenidine may be helpful. If pain is severe more potent analgesic like tramadol or gabapentin may be needed.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
