Hi my 27 year old daughter just saw her GYN. She has heavy periods and has had decrease in her Hgb to 10. She has a history of Rheumatoid arthritis but otherwise healthy. She hasn’t taken Birth control in the past and doesn’t really want to start. Are there other explanations for her heavy menses and possibly other diagnostic tests that should be explored befor she is offered BC?
She can consider imaging to take a look at the uterus to make sure there is no structural reason for the heavy bleeding such as fibroids or changes to the endometrium.
Blood tests can also be done to check hormone levels.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
