How Can Hiatal Hernia Be Treated?

I have a 4 millimeter hiatal hernia, over the last two weeks anything I attempt to eat causes a pressure type of pain & bloating from my diaphragm through my thoracic cavity; along with gas. I can only manage to eat about 4 mouthfuls of food. If I try to drink a mouthful of water it repeats and causes me to bring up mucous. I am a 66 year old female who has had multiple spinal cord fusions ( C 3,4,5 with a bridge to C-6...+ fusions at L-4,5 & 6 ). I use prescription medications from 1 doctor for pain management; Oxycontin 80mg two times a day, Roxicodone 30mg. PRN for breakthrough pain, Valium, since Nov.1995 along with Nexium 40, Dexilant, Levsin, Singulair, Promethium, Estrodiol, Lexapro, Syntharoid .025, and Immitrex Ampule Injection for cluster migraines. I have just moved to another state and am aware I need to see a Internist and G.I. but cannot find one due to Labor Day Weekend. Is surgery my only option ? What can I do to help myself over the long weekend ?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Generally small hiatal hernia doesn’t require any treatment. You can take antacids like Pantoprazole for symptomatic relief. If symptoms are severe surgical repair is needed and we have to make sure that the symptoms are due to hiatal hernia itself and not due to other causes like anxiety. Avoid hot and spicy foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
