How Can Hiatal Hernia Be Treated?

My wife, who is an 83-year-old healthy person, has been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia that causes her to have a chronic cough. She has tried proton pump inhibitors with no success and will not take them because of their serious side effects. Is there any solution other than surgery?

hello welcome to healthcaremagic.
I am Dr. Arpit varshney and i will surely help you out.
please try and understand that hiatus hernia is best treated with surgery.
but best treatment plan varies from person to person.
in your wife's case, best treatment will be symptomatic i.e proton pump inhibitors and calcium channel blockers.
please try and understand and surgery at this age can do more harm than good because this is a very fragile age, she wont be able to bear surgery for long and hiatus hernia surgery is quite complicated.
if problem worsens please visit your clinician and they will work out the best treatment plan for you by grading the symptoms and the hernia.

I hope this helps.
please feel free to revert back in case of any further concerns/queries.
i wish for your good health
thank you.
