How Can High Blood Sugar Levels With Moderate Levels Of Ketone Be Treated?
Hello, what if you do have a high reading on your Ketones ? My grandson has type 1 diabetes. Typically, if he has a high reading on his blood sugar, he takes a little extra insulin to adjust. If he has a level of 400 and his ketone test shows moderate, what are we supposed to do ?
It would be best for him to see his doctor for assessment. High ketones would imply that his body is not able to use the carbohydrates for energy and it is looking for other sources of energy.
It can be an emergency situation for type 1 diabetics. It can be associated with dehydration , abnormal levels of sodium and potassium. Blood tests are needed to check these levels and iv fluids are commonly needed along with insulin.
If his blood sugars are difficult to control then he may need his insulin regimen changed. He may need to look at the amount of insulin he takes to cover his meals, to see if he is taking enough. These high blood sugar need to be avoided.
I hope this helps
