Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my 19 year old, non verbal, autistic son came has had a 102 - 104 degree fever for 24 hours. Can only use a liquid motrin/advil (wont take a pill) to try to reduce fever. he s been sleeping most of the day. What else can I do to reduce the fever, or when should I take him to a doctor. What differently will they do? Thanks
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I appreciate your concern for your son. Since he is autistic you need to be more watchful for his symptoms like if he develops shivering, loose motion, yellowish urine, cough and respiratory difficulty? In addition to Motrin/Advil syrup, I would advise you for cold sponging with ice cold water and give he lots of fluids orally to maintain good hydration.
If fever doesn't subside in a day or two, I would advise you to take him to emergency care for baseline investigation like CBC, liver function test, malaria and dengue test or X-ray chest if he develops cough.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to ask for follow up question I will gladly answer you.
Best wishes, Dr. B R Hudda
