Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism. But my physicians only check the TSH level and tell me it s fine. Recently I have developed Barrett s esophagus so must take omeprazole 40 mg daily to stop the symptoms. I have heard that low thyroid also has the effect of weakening sphincter muscles. What should I have checked to make sure that my thyroid is actually functioning as it should, or if I need thyroid supplement?

How Can Hypothyroidism Be Diagnosed?
Hello, You can do a complete thyroid function test (which includes TSH, freeT3, freeT4.) If the hormone status is normal, no need to supplement thyroxine. We have to rule out other causes like anemia which can mimic hypothyroidism. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
