I had a stroke/carotid artery ultrasound evaluation through a health fair mobile unit. The last three years my results showed none. This year however the results showed Minimal...intimal thickening and/or minute plaque documented. RICA PSV 61.2 cm/sec. REV 18.4 cm/sec LICA PSV 71.2 cm EDV19.6 cm. IS THIS DANGEROUS? I m 65 years, woman. I m concerned that I went from none to minimal. Thank you in advance for any information. I m very concerned about this. I receive regularly. I eat a low saturated fat diet. I have never smoked or ever had alcohol.I ve never been over weight. I m upset because I feel like I take very good care of myself and now I have plague in my carotid artery. Thank you Ms Elaine
Hi, Elaine. Dont worry and continue to follow the good habits and lifestyle you follow. Other than lifestyle risk factors there are also other hereditary and unknown factors that lead to plaque formation. Your report must have mentioned the percentage of narrowing, if any. Please let me know the same. The PSVs are fine, you need to keep yourself in surveillance with an yearly Ultrasound or Doppler test. If you are very worried, you can start taking medications. I usually prescribe Aspirin or Ecosprin 75mg once a day to my patients to control complications of the plaque. Take care and feel free to ask more queries on my Profile page.
