How Can I Stop Taking Ativan?

I have been taking ativan since December. I started taking .5mg 3 times a day, them 1mg 3 times per day and now 2mg 2 times per day but always as needed so I don t take it all of the time. I had a seizure in December. How to I stop taking it? My doctor said I could just stop taking it but I have read it could cause a seizure. Thank you. jeane

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Ativan(lorazepam)is a benzodiazepine.Usual dose: 2 to 6 mg/day (range, 1 to 10 mg/day) in divided doses.
Like all benzodiazepines, Ativan can cause physical dependence. Suddenly stopping therapy may be associated with agitation, insomnia, seizures, tremors, vomiting, and sweating.
If Ativan has been used long-term, the recommendation is a gradual dose taper over a period of weeks, months or longer, according to dose and duration of use, degree of dependence and the individual.
