How Can I Tell If I Have A Splinter Or

How can i tell if i have a splinter or splinter hemorrahges? I have recently seen something under my nail. Someone else tried to "get it out" and apparently got a peice of it. However, i dont think its a splinter at all. How do i know if i have a splinter or splinter hemorrhages? This is a silly question im sure.
