How Can Impaired Motor Skills While Suffering From Potassium Deficiency Be Treated?

Hi, recently I was hospitalized for potassium undernourishment. I spent 3 days on a potassium IV drip, however, my body did not respond. I was given a prescription of potassium and sent home. My potassium never stabilized and less than a month after my hospital discharge, I was back in bed feeling like I was in the fight for my life. This time, my motor skills became alarming after this second episode ; I have to remember how to walk, actually tell my feet where to go and even then I still feel wobbly and weak . My hand writing now resembles that of an 80-yr-old (no offense to the elderly). Did I/am I succumbing to some type of brain damage? What do I do? Who do I see or talk to?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, you have likely suffered from hypokalemic periodic paralysis and supplements of potassium may be needed for long term but cause work up should be done including adrenal gland abnormalities to renal acidosis etc and endocrinologist review is a must alongside work up for levels of essential micronutrients like B6, B 12, folic acid etc and replacement may be started.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
