How Can Infected Hair Follicle On The Upper Back Be Treated?

Can you tell me if this boil is something I should extract, or does it need to be left for a doctor? It started like an infected hair, and then changed to a blood scab. When I scratched it loose, I noticed the white pocket under the scab that looks like a seed. It is on my wife s upper back. I will try to upload a photo.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It seems that your wife has developed a Folliculitis. It is caused due to infection of a hair follicle. I won't advise you not to scratch it as it may lead to infection.

You should get it checked by a surgeon to decide whether it needs excision or it will heal with an antibiotic course.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma Amman
