Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Infection Be Prevented While Suffering From ITP?
I have been diagnosed with ITP. My oncologist is putting me on prednisone for 4 to 6 week and says I need to be on an antibiotic to prevent infection. I am allergic to Bactrim, penicillin, cell or , keflex, so they are trying to get approval for pentamidine. I am guessing the is to prevent fungal pneumonia. So if you have gotten the prevarication 13 shot would that prevent it?
The answer to your question is a simple no... Unfortunately, the vaccine prevents only pneumonia caused by certain strains of pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumonia). Other bacteria and viruses cannot be prevented with this vaccine. Your doctor should specify the appropriate antibiotic for your case by balancing the potential side effects with the anticipated benefits. Your medical history is very important in this regard and your doctor knows it better than anybody else.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis,
