How Can Infection In The Lungs After An Open Heart Surgery Be Treated?

I had open heart surgery on Feb 27. My chest cavity filled with fluid and caused my left lung to partially collapse. Will this cause an infection in my lung that causes me to be weak and unable to gain my strength back? What can be done to help me expand my lung?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, pressure on the lung can cause collapse. Many times the collapsed lung expands as the cause is treated, so if the cause is removed, most of the times the collapsed lung would expand.

We recommend breathing exercises like forceful ballooning and deep breathing. There is a special device we use called triflow apparatus.

Rarely surgery may be needed to help a collapsed lung if not healed with above.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
