How Can Insomnia And Confusion While Suffering From Dementia Be Treated?

My mother in law has really bad damentia. Up all night. Calling us at crazy hours during the night. She lives alone in a independent living facility. Her doctor has not given us any help about what we should be doing. Do you know of anything that can help her with her sleep and confusion?

Hello,

First of all you have to exclude that she has a new acute medical condition causing this confusion (eg a urine infection). If medically she is ok you can consider giving her low dose haloperidol or the more modern treatment quetiapine and see how she goes. Start with low doses as they both have side effects (eg increased risk of falls) but quetiapine has less

Kind regards
