How Can Insomnia Be Treated While On Warfarin And Atenolol?

I am taking Warfarin and Atenalol for Atrial Fib. I have been having trouble sleeping and would like to know what sleeping aid is safe to take with these two medications. I was told my my Electrophysiologist that it would be ok to take Benadryl. Is there a limit as to how often i can use it? I have been taking it about once a week. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would like to tell you that Benadryl is an antihistamine and drowsiness is a side-effect of Benadryl so it should not be used as an aid to induce sleep. You should talk to your physician about your insomnia, and he will prescribe you a medicine according to your health profile.

Most commonly used anxiolytic is Alprazolam but it is a prescription drug and hence have to be taken only after prescribed by a physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma Amman
