How Can Interrelated Crohn S Disease And Arthritis Be Treated?

Hi, I have Crohnes disease and Degenrative bone and joint disease. I have been with a pain management Dr. for over 10 years, but he is now retired. I have been on a regiment of oxycodone 30mg methadone 10mg fentayle 50mic and Soma 350. I have tried some procedures, but they have little effect on me because my pain is just in the back, it is more global. How do I go about finding a Dr. that may continue on this regiment

Hello,

Thank you for your question. Crohn disease is a disorder that can cause diarrhea, belly pain, and other symptoms that affect the digestive tract. The digestive tract is the part of the body that takes in and breaks down food. It includes the mouth, the stomach, and the intestines. When it is working normally, the body's immune system kills germs and bad cells that could turn into cancer. Sometimes, instead of killing only bad cells, something goes wrong and the immune system starts to attack healthy cells. That is called an autoimmune response. This is what happens in Crohn disease. if you have Cronhn disease, your body is attacking the lining of your digestive tract. The causes inflammation, which can lead to sores(ulcer) and bleeding.

Symptoms of Crohn disease can get better or worse at different times. But the condition cannot be cured. Luckily, there are medicines and other treatments that can improve its symptoms. The most common symptoms are diarrhea, belly pain, feeling tired, weight loss, and fever. Some people with Crohn disease also affect on joint that make joint pain (most common extraintestinal complication) , also mouth sores, skin rashes, and eye redness.

There are many different medicines that help reduce the symptoms of Crohn disease. Almost all theses medicines work by reducing inflammation and the body's immune response. Some medicines treat symptoms when they are at their worst. Other medicines help keep symptoms from starting up or coming back.

Your symptoms might improve if you cut down on food that make your symptoms worse. Some people have problems with foods that have a lot of fiber, such as fruits and vegetables. Quit smoking, if you smoke. Smoking make symptoms worse and increases the chances that you will need surgery. Avoid medicines such as Ibuprofen and naproxen.

In general, people with arthritis may use nonstroidal anti-inflammatory drug(NSAIDs) to reduce pain and swelling of the joints. However, as a rule, these medications are not good option for everyone with Crohn disease because they can irritate the intestinal lining and increase inflammation. Corticosteroids also may be used to treat the arthritis symptoms as well as Crohn disease. One inflammation as decreased, after a course of a medication such as pregnisolone or salfasalacine ( or other 5-aminosalicylates), Joint pain generally disappears. because they take months to work, the immunomodulator azathioprine and 6-marcaptopurine are not used specifically to control joint inflammation. However, the immunomodulator methotresate can be an effective treatment for Crohn associated joint pain.

In addition to medication, doctors may recommend resting the affected joint, occasional use moist heat, or range of motion exercises, as demonstrated by a physical therapist.

You should go back to your hospital and they will find our for you which is the right doctor for you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards,
Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey, General and Family Physician.
