How Can Joint Pain Be Treated?

I was given Bromelain with Quercetin by a Dr. for an outpatient procedure. I took it as directed for my procedure but also found that joint pain in my shoulder and hands stopped. I stopped taking the Bromelain (only prescribed for 2 weeks) and my joint pain is back. I would like to start taking it again for joint pain. Is there any negatives for prolonged use?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Bromelain is an enzyme extracted from pineapple. It has good anti-inflammatory properties. This explains why the joint pain in your should and hands stopped when taking Bromelain supplement.

It is usually packaged with Quercetin, which is an anti-oxidant of flavonoids group. Both have anti-inflammatory properties.

Their use is safe as long as you take at the lowest dosage for long periods (non more than 400 mg/day).

I remind the possible interaction between bromelain and quercetin with anti-coagulants, as this combination increases risks for bleeding. So, if you are taking any anti-coagulants, should discuss with your physician first as coagulation tests are necessary to get done and analyzed first.

Hope this helps.
