How Can Laryngitis And Hoarseness Be Treated?

I started more than 3 weeks ago with a small cough which in two days turned into what I thought was laryngitis. That was from Friday thru Monday. Then I started to cough a lot more and worse. I coughed so hard sometimes I felt I was going to vomit. A very soar throat also started. Now my cough is a little better.. I still cough quite a bit though and my throat continues to be quite soar. I don t have signs of a head cold. My voice although quite a bit better continues to be hoarse.

Hello,

As per your query you have symptoms of laryngitis and hoarseness which are pointing towards upper respiratory tract infection which is leading to inflammation of vocal cards.

I would suggest you to:
- Take steam inhalation along with vaporizers
- Avoid hot, sharp, spicy food.
- Avoid cold beverages
- Take throat lozenges
- Start doing warm saline gargles
- Drink one spoon of honey mix with glass of lukewarm water

If symptoms keep on persisting, then consult an ENT specialist for proper examination. The doctor may order a throat swab test and blood test to confirm the diagnosis and rule out causes.

The doctor may prescribe antibacterial amoxicillin or antiviral acyclovir depending upon the diagnosis along with anti-inflammatory medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
