How Can Liver Cirrhosis Be Treated?

The colorectal doctor ordered a Cat Scan for me because my stomach is very huge. He said I have CIRRHOSIS AND REFERRED NE TO A LIVER SPECIALIST THAT i CAN T SEE UNTIL May 24th. Also, he said Iif I quit drinking I can live 10 to 20 years, but if I continue to drink, maybe 5 to ten. He also said I should moderste my drinking. This is confusing, but I don t want to drink ever again. My Dad, aunt and and maternal grandfather died from drinking. Until I get to see the liver specialist. do you think his age statistics are correct?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Cirrhosis is an irreversible stage of liver disease as liver fibrosis already occurred.

Yes, you should quit drinking now. With drinking stoppage, some patient can survive for 10 or more years also.

If possible, to reduce portal hypertension TIPSS like operation can be done.

Liver transplantation is an ultimate treatment if age and clinical status suitable but costly. Beta-blocker and diuretic drugs prescribed as per need.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
