How Can Long-term Burning Mouth Syndrome Be Treated?
Elavil Question - I ve had burning mouth tongue syndrome for 15 years and no doctor has been able to figure out how to treat it. My family doctor has me trying Elavil 10mg to start, increasing to 20mg after the first couple of weeks. What is your opinion? Any other suggestions? I ve taken numerous medicines, had all the blood tests which showed no deficiencies and have seen 5 or 6 specialist without a solution. Thanks for any info you could pass my way. Carol
Burning mouth syndrome is a condition in which there is burning sensation inside mouth and can also be associated with a scalded feeling and can also experience numbing sensation.. It can occur due to a number of causes like nutritional deficiency of iron and vitamin B12, dry mouth or xerostomia, stress, acid reflux, side effects of medicines etc.. Treatment of underlying cause will resolve the symptoms.. Elavil contains active ingredient Amitriptylline that is a tricyclic antidepressant and is commonly seen to alleviate such pain.. As of now to get relieved you can start gargling with a numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine.. Take Vitamin B complex supplements.. Take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen.. Avoid spicy foods and take a soft bland diet.. Suck ice pops..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
